Rick and Lila are native Arizonans, each grew up in Tucson, Arizona. In the late 1960′s, as teenagers, they along with their respective families would camp in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico (Rocky Point) on Sandy Beach during Spring Break, Thanksgiving, or any 3-day weekends. It was such a popular place that you could easily have thousands of college kids, other families, and die-hard fishermen camping on Sandy Beach.

Sandy Beach was and still is a very popular spot for Arizonans since it is only a 4-hour drive from Phoenix and Tucson. Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point)was a small fishing town exporting shrimp and fish. JJ’s Cantina in Cholla Bay was entertainment for everyone. We could drive our ATC’s and sandrails on the beach or ride over to Competition Hill. Now, that was fun and exciting.

We bought our house in Playa Encanto not far from the town. At that time, there were about 35 beachhouses. Everyone knew one another and just enjoyed being by the ocean. When there was a new moon, you could not believe the stars in the night sky. Our children used to count the satellites orbiting around Earth. During the low tides, you could walk out a hundred yards to the tidal pools and find all sorts of critters. The beach in Playa Encanto is soft white sand. Our children loved the beach. Even our pets loved the beach.

We have very fond memories of those early days as teenagers, then as parents and now grandparents. There’s nothing more serene than watching the sunset over the ocean and listening to the waves rolling in.
